LIFE LESSON: 75 pupils and teachers from Lilyfontein took part in the first ever East London school SleepOut. Pupils slept outside on cardboard boxes with blankets during the night and ate at a soup kitchen at the school. They collected much-needed items for Nkwezana School near Crossways. POETRY IN MOTION: Pupils from George Randell Primary School participated in the South African Council for English Education Brian Cook 2016 Poetry Festival recently alongside 13 other schools. DICTIONARY DIVAS: On July 22, the East London district department of education foundation phase hosted the grade 3 district spelling bee competition. The East London foundation phase has three languages of learning and teaching including Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. The competition was held at Grens Primary School. The number one pupils at a district level were: Endinazo Ngwendu for English (Cranberry), Ane du Plessis for Afrikaans (Nahoon) and Soyama Silwana for isiXhosa (Mtyeku). RETAIL THERAPY: The Selborne College isiXhosa Society raised funds for and donated blankets and groceries to the Likhaya Lethemba Orphanage at Gubevu Location, near King William's Town. This initiative was organised as part of Selborne's contribution to the 67 Minutes for Madiba. The children at the orphanage received two bags full of groceries and a warm blanket each. FUTURE SCIENTISTS: Clarendon Prep Grade 3s are being exposed to the exciting world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Here they are testing out their new 'roominate' kits - exploring circuits, motors and engines whilst designing doll houses and camper vans. Technology has never been such fun!

FOOD FOR THE SOUL: Stirling Primary School pupil Brad Blom made 200 love sandwiches recently which he brought to school to be donated to those in need. He used the money he received for his birthday to purchase the sandwich contents and bags of apples.

VICTORIOUS MELODIES: The Aqua Vista Primary School junior marimba band took part in the National Marimba Festival in Gauteng recently. They won first place for the set piece section.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Selborne College welcomed their eigth Wrekin College exchange student, Owen Parton, from England recently. Pictured is Parton, left, with host Rick Zacapa at Addo Elephant Park. The exchange offers unique opportunities for boys at both schools to experience another culture at a relatively young age.
FESTIVAL SUCCESS: Well done to the Merrifield College marimba band who won two second places and to the primary school band for winning a third place at the recent International Marimba Festival in Johannesburg. The bands came up against stiff competition and carried themselves well.
ADDING UP TO VICTORY: Congratulations to Stirling Primary pupil Callum Emslie who won the Grade 3 East London District Mental Maths competition. Ayakha Mani from Snomonde Public School took second place and Kamva Mashalaba of Cambridge Primary School took third place. Emslie achieved second place that the Eastern Cape Mental Maths competition.
ALIENS AMONG US: Gonubie Primary's annual big walk fundraiser in the middle of August was a successful and colourful extravaganza. This year, the unpredictable August weather played along and the conditions were perfect. These Grade 3 pupils were dressed up as space aliens. PERCUSSION POWER: George Randell Primary School participated in the International Marimba Festival in Johannesburg from July 29 to August 1. The school took a team of 16 Grade 6 and 7 pupils. They competed in three song categories, and were presented with a category award for battle of the band event, which included teams from high schools.
GOING FOR GOLD: Pupils at Clarendon Primary School spent a day learning about the Olympics recently. Girls were able to choose the activities they wanted to do from a variety of choices. Pictured are some of the pupils showing off their posters.
