MAKEOVER: Grade 11 pupils from Centre of Excellence offered 67 minutes of community service to Langham House Old Age Home in anticipation of Nelson Mandela Day. Pupils painted the courtyard wall, cleaned up the garden and assisted in the office. Matron Elmarie Gower thanked them for their help. The pupils are pictured here in front of the newly painted wall.

BOW WOW!: Sharon Kriel's Grade 1 class at Stirling Primary School recently collected an impressive amount of pet food to donate to the SPCA. Class mom Susan van Scheltema, left, heard about the plight of the SPCA and organised with pupils parents to collect food for the animals. The collection was organised as a surprise for Kriel, middle, as she is a big animal lover. Pictured are the pupils with their impressive donation, which has already been delivered to the SPCA.

IN THEIR SHOES: The girls at Clarendon Primary recently supported the worldwide initiative 'A day without shoes'. The girls and staff came to school barefoot for a day in exchange for a pair of shoes that were donated to charity. TRASH FOR CASH: The Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA), three eco-schools and Buffalo City Metro joined hands in cleaning up one of the most littered spots in East London, the 'Black Road' and slopes of Duncan Village. Pupils (pictured) from Zuzile Junior Primary School were tasked with picking up recyclable items, which were taken to BCM's Buy Back Centre. They also undertook waste sorting and saw where the waste would go and how it would benefit the green community.

TALENTED PUPILS: Stirling Grade 6 and 7 pupils participated in the online Computer Talent Search Competition in March. There were 35 830 entries from more than 400 schools. Nicholas Heath, Byron Emslie, Bili Graham and Tayla Muller received a gold award, which means they beat 90% of the participants countrywide. Mari-Juan Machin achieved 100%. GREEN WARRIORS: The Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA), three eco-schools and the Buffalo City Municipality joined hands in a three-day clean-up campaign on the Black Road in May. David Mama High pupils completed a door-to-door awareness campaign in Duncan Village, talking to community members, finding out the root cause of littering and how it affects them and giving them advice on how it can be managed. They were also taken to different community garbage drop-off points and illegal dumping sites to see the dangers and unsightliness that litter causes. MINI MUSICAL MAESTROS: Stirling Primary music pupils enjoyed a very successful Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod. Many gold and special mention certificates were awarded. CONGRATULATIONS: Cambridge Primary are extremely proud of their Grade 2 and 3 percussion band, as well as the teachers who achieved a wonderful result in the recent Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod. For the first time in the school's history, their achieved a special mention award (over 90%) and were awarded the medal for the best junior percussion band 2016

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!: Clarendon Primary School recently celebrated their 79th birthday. Cutting the cake at the special founder's day assembly, are principal Pam King and Katherine Gaylard, who celebrated her 12th birthday on the school's birthday.
BIKE BUZZ: Lilyfontein School hosted 243 riders of all ages and abilities at their annual Motorbike and Quad Bike Fun Ride on Saturday June 11. A lot of planning and preparation went into designing the routes that are both fun, for the less experienced riders, and challenging for the riders opting for the extreme loops. It was a uniquely fun day out for the whole family with riders as young as six able to take part with their parents.
PJS AND PILLOWS: Each term Scripture Union (SU) and Gonubie Primary School arranges a fun evening for all the children who attend the Wednesday SU sessions. This term they had a fun movie night. The children wore PJs, gowns and slippers and brought a pillow and a blanket or sleeping bag. Lying around in the hall watching the movie was a new experience for, from left, Skye Rowan, Leeyah Knock and Gabrial Brook.

BONDING SESSION: Gonubie Primary's mentorship programme has finally gone full circle. In their positions as older brothers and sisters, Grade 6 and 7 pupils have 'adopted' younger siblings from Grade 1 to Grade 5 into their family group. They finally met as complete family groups for the first time recently to discuss any problems they might encounter on the playground at break times or after school.
