55 parkruns later, ‘Pappa G’ inspires others to follow

For local runner Mmetse “Pappa G” Pitje, Saturday mornings have become far more than just a routine exercise — they have fundamentally reshaped his health, discipline, and sense of community.

With 55 parkruns under his belt since June 2025, Pitje credits the weekly Kidd’s Beach parkrun with giving his life a renewed focus on healthy living.

His total count would have been even higher had he not occasionally stepped away to compete in formal road races, which have earned him six medals under his Team Vitality colours.

Yet, the road to fitness was not an easy one from the start.

“Running 5km once felt impossible,” Pitje said.

“In the early weeks, the distance was a genuine struggle until I met Steve Bruce and his wife, Llyn Bruce. Steve is the event director for the Kidd’s Beach parkrun.

“They offered encouragement and patiently showed me how to download the parkrun app and register as a regular participant.”

That initial spark of support transformed Pitje’s perspective.

Today, the roles are reversed: he now spends his Saturdays welcoming newcomers and guiding them through their first 5km walks and runs.

Beyond the physical benefits, Pitje highlights the deep camaraderie built along the coastal route.

Warm greetings, supportive cheers from volunteers, and playful calls of “Come on, Papa G, you can do better … no walking till the end!” have become central to his weekend experience.

Celebrating his milestone run remains an emotional highlight, and Pitje plans to give back by volunteering as an event photographer once every three months.

“Through Kidd’s Beach parkrun, I have found not only fitness, but family,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Kidd’s Beach event is preparing for a major milestone.

Kidd’s Beach parkrun director Steve Bruce confirmed to the Go! on Tuesday that on October 3, the venue will host its landmark 600th event.
