Redefining hospitality in West Bank

In the heart of West Bank, at 103 Hood Street, a vibrant local vision is quietly reshaping KuGompo City’s local tourism and lifestyle landscape.

What began as a passion project for entrepreneur Sikelela Ndesi, 36, has grown into Azania Homegrown — a multi-faceted lifestyle hub offering everything from shisa nyama platters and poolside event hosting to car washes, spa treatments, and boutique market days.

“We consider it part of hospitality, but the business is broken down into different segments,” Ndesi told Go! on Tuesday.

“Our main stream of revenue is the food, but it branches out into so many other avenues.”

A feast for every palate

At the core of Azania Homegrown’s operations is its bustling food kitchen. Offering sit-in options, local West Bank deliveries, and listings on Mr D and Uber Eats, the establishment caters to both casual walk-ins and local foodies.

Their menu features township staples alongside modern comfort foods:

Shisa nyama: Single portions, combos, and generous platters served with sides of chips and signature sauces.

iKota range: A diverse lineup of loaded township ikota.

Seafood & drinks: Fresh fish, milkshakes, and refreshing cordial cocktails.

Custom catering: Full-course meals and bulk orders, including traditional fat cakes (vetkoek), for private functions and gatherings.

Poolside vibes and private functions

Beyond food, Azania Homegrown has carved out a niche as one of West Bank’s most versatile intimate event venues. Accommodating up to 50 guests, the space regularly hosts baby showers, birthday celebrations, corporate staff parties, and family gatherings.

The venue boasts a swimming pool, jacuzzi, braai facilities, and a spacious open-air backyard.

“When people sit in and eat, we have a setup with tables and chairs at the back,” Ndesi said.

“And if guests want something special, we can set up a beautiful picnic vibe complete with umbrellas and mats.”

A full-service car wash also allows patrons to enjoy a meal or drink while their vehicles are cleaned.

Sibling synergy: pampering at P.Serene

The business model extends into wellness through a unique collaboration with Ndesi’s sister, Paulla Ndesi, who operates P.Serene on-site.

By combining forces, Azania Homegrown and P.Serene offer curated pamper packages that blend gourmet food with luxury self-care.

While waiting for food or enjoying a day out, guests can access massages, nail care, pedicures, and manicures.

For out-of-town guests or late-night partygoers, Azania Homegrown maintains a close partnership with the nearby Igwazi Guesthouse.

Looking ahead: monthly summer market days

As warmer weather approaches, Ndesi is expanding the hub’s cultural footprint with monthly market days starting in September.

Designed as an incubator for local talent, the markets will run from midday to 8pm, creating a family-friendly marketplace for local visual artists, fashion designers, clothing vendors, and performing artists.
