An Umtiza Arts Festival regular act is set to serenade crowds at the much-anticipated Masibuyelembo Arts Festival, taking place at the Dimbaza Shack Theatre in Zabalaza this Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
The first-of-its-kind festival in the area, hosted by Mawethu “Mholo Mholo” Siyakane and Anezo Mbilase, will see Luthando Mzi hitting the high notes with his guitar. Having featured as one of the main music acts at this year’s Umtiza Arts Festival at the Guild Theatre, Mzi will share the stage with up-and-coming local acts including Elizah, El-Figo 80 Crisis, Vovo, Sibo, and Amanda.
Popular Itjala Lamawele actor Phekeze will also entertain attendees with his signature isiXhosa comedic antics.
Siyakane said the initiative was born out of observing local creatives struggling to make ends meet due to a lack of employment and industry opportunities.
“The idea is just to help artists get something in their pockets and also develop an initiative that will bring interest to our area, which is rich in talent,” Siyakane said.
“There are a lot of artists here, but a lack of support leaves them stagnant. Me and my co-hosts want to change this for the better by contributing what we have to pay artists a performance fee. I hope this encourages them to pursue their craft and not give up on their dreams.”
Beyond supporting local artists, Siyakane highlighted the event’s role in addressing social challenges affecting local youth, such as unemployment and substance abuse.
“A lot of young people in this area are sitting at home without qualifications or job experience,” he said.
“Our youth are also spending time drinking alcohol and using drugs. Hosting events like this provides a platform for young people to stay occupied and entertained, while giving hope to those struggling with addiction.”
Siyakane expressed gratitude for securing a strong headline performer for the maiden event.
“We are delighted to have a headline act like Luthando Mzi, who is gifted and well-known across the Eastern Cape because of his music and acting skill he showcased on radio TruFM,” Siyakane said.
“He has shared the stage with the likes of the Jaziel Brothers and Lwa Ndlunkulu at this year’s Umtiza Festival in KuGompo City.”
Mzi shared his enthusiasm for the event, expressing hope that it becomes a permanent fixture on the local cultural calendar.
“It’s something that should happen every year because the experience will be unforgettable, especially for the youth,” Mzi said.
“We get to showcase our craft through music, cultural food, screenplays, and clothing design. We are going back to our roots.”
