Another exciting chapter in the growth of padel in KuGompo City will be written this Friday evening when the Royal Padel League launches its inaugural Over-40s League at Beacon Bay Country Club.
The competition is the first of its kind in the city and promises to showcase that age is no barrier to high-level competition, determination and a passion for the sport.
Padel has experienced remarkable growth throughout SA in recent years, with KuGompo becoming one of the country’s fastest-growing centres for the sport. The introduction of the Royal Padel League Over-40s Competition is another important milestone and highlights the increasing demand for competitive opportunities across all age groups.
The league will feature 24 experienced players divided into two groups of 12. Each group will compete in a sectional round-robin format over the coming weeks, with every match carrying significant importance.
At the conclusion of the group stage, the top eight players from each section will qualify for the round of 16 before progressing to the quarter-finals, semifinals and ultimately the final, where the first-ever Royal Padel League over-40s champions will be crowned.
With so much quality spread throughout both sections, there is no obvious favourite to lift the trophy.
Many of the competitors have years of racket sport experience and have become familiar faces on East London’s padel courts.
The balanced nature of the draw means that every fixture is expected to be fiercely contested, with the outcome likely to remain uncertain until the closing stages of the competition.
League organiser Darren Govender believes the competition is another positive step in the continued development of padel in the city.
“Our vision has always been to create opportunities for players of all ages to compete in well-organised, enjoyable and highly competitive events.
The Over-40s League recognises the commitment and passion of experienced players who continue to play at an exceptionally high standard.
“We are excited to see the league get underway and are confident it will become one of the highlights of the local sporting calendar.”
The league will be played every Friday from 6-10pm at Beacon Bay Country Club, providing the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
Spectators can expect a lively atmosphere with music, food and refreshments available throughout the evening, making the event enjoyable for families, friends and supporters as well as the players themselves.
While there will undoubtedly be plenty of friendly rivalry on court, the league also aims to strengthen the growing padel community by bringing players together in a competitive but respectful environment.
