Local social enterprise Alert the Royal has claimed top honours in the prestigious 2026 IWISA No 1 Eastern Cape Community Champions competition, securing R70,000 in direct cash investment alongside business development support.
Founded by social entrepreneur Mphumzi Gcora in 2010, the poultry-farming business based in the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality within the Chris Hani District was celebrated at a gala event at KuGompo City Hall on Friday.
The award recognises its outstanding contributions towards tackling regional unemployment and strengthening local food security.
The ceremony marked a milestone for IWISA No 1 as the brand celebrates its 70th anniversary under the theme Heroes, Heroines and Heritage.
Out of 208 provincial entries, six shortlisted Eastern Cape social enterprises presented their models to an expert panel before the top three were announced.
Alert the Royal supplies fresh and hatching eggs, day-old chicks, broiler chickens, poultry processing services, and organic manure.
Gcora said the R70,000 first prize would directly fund farm infrastructure expansion to boost chicken and egg production.
Combined with business mentorship, he said the investment represented a massive step forward in building opportunity within the municipality. Second place and R50,000 went to Billa Billa Energy Solutions, represented by Mando Mgcuwa. Based in KuGompo, the business provides affordable solar and electrical solutions, including system design, maintenance, and free safety inspections to underserved communities.
Third place and R30,000 was awarded to Kevinot Farming, represented by Nonopa Tenza. Established in 2017 on a 406ha family farm in Matatiele, the enterprise breeds livestock, grows yellow maize, sugar beans, and fodder crops, and offers agricultural mechanisation contracting.
All finalists receive access to enterprise bootcamps and ongoing mentorship through corporate partnerships, ensuring long-term community impact.
